RS Standards are now engaged in the 2nd phase of the Irish Coordinated Local Aquaculture Management Systems (CLAMS) Project. CLAMS is an Irish Seafood Development Agency, Bord Iascaigh Mhara (BIM) initiative that has been in place for over 20 years.

Dave Garforth, CLAMS Project Lead comments that “this 2nd phase will see the continued development of CLAMS across important aquaculture regions throughout Ireland including Castlemaine, Shannon, Killary Harbour, Donegal and Bantry/Dunmanus Bays.”

CLAMS provides a bottom-up approach for producers to present their priorities and sustainable development plans in a coordinated and concise manner and within the context of marine spatial planning. This is vital to ensure aquaculture remains a growing and thriving sector, contributing to sustainable jobs in rural coastal regions and producing safe and sustainable seafoods.

As the year progresses, further regions will be added, leading to the continued coordinated growth of sustainable aquaculture in synergy with the growing maritime economy.

Ireland provides us with an excellent working example of how a collaborative process can support understanding, advance collective priorities in, for example; the protection of water quality, supporting biodiversity, managing biosecurity and fish health, spatial planning and market development. Dave Garforth also adds that “Ultimately, this is about building a resilient, environmentally sound and healthy aquaculture sector.”
