Aquaculture Consultant

 

The Opportunity 

RS Standards has an exciting opportunity for an aquaculture expert and leader to join the management team of our dynamic international standards and consulting organisation. The role will involve servicing clients and opportunities mainly in Ireland, but our services expand into the UK, Europe, North and South America and Asia.

RS Standards has been at the forefront of new aquaculture standard and improvement frameworks and has been leading initiatives in area management, responsible plastic management and sustainability standards.

The successful candidate will play a key leadership role within the team acting as the primary interface with designated clients on consultation projects of significant scale and will be reporting to the RS Operations Director.  

Key responsibilities will include; offering technical and subject matter expertise, coaching and facilitation and report writing. Our consultants must have the ability to assimilate policy, regulatory and technical information into various information and communication styles and objective reports. 

We are looking for a self-motivated individual with excellent communication and coaching skills with a proven track record in the ability to assimilate and analyse new information diligently and prepare accurate, technical and science-based reports for clients. 

The current projects are predominantly in Ireland with some international opportunities. The successful candidate may work from home.

Location: Preferably Ireland based but other locations could be considered.

RS standards is actively seeking a practical minded aquaculture expert to assist us with this area management and aquaculture standards opportunity. The role will require project planning, coaching, execution and report generation in accordance with client ad RS Standard’s specification. 

Key responsibilities will include; client management, team resourcing and management, stakeholder consultation, information review, interrogation and collation of information, plus standard innovation and design.  Equally, testing the viability of Standards, Initiatives and Frameworks with respect to practicality of implementation and credibility will also be requirements. Knowledge of environmental interactions of aquaculture, EU Policy and Directives concerning Marine Spatial Planning, Marine Strategy Framework and Water Framework Directives, Natura 2000, Climate Adaptation and Biodiversity Action Plan a distinct advantage.  

 

Key Responsibilities and Activities (Your Role)

  • To lead and assist in the management of Aquaculture Projects and Area Management Initiatives.

  • To identify, build and manage a support team of aquaculture and area management experts.

  • To lead and assist in the innovation and development of aquaculture sector standards and improvement initiatives.

  • To liaise with producer and government type organisations to assist them in the Area Management journey.

  • To carry out assessments (desktop / physical) against agreed standards in accordance with documented procedures and maintain full records of all such initiatives.

  • To respond to customer requests within agreed timescales, to assess the compliance and responses and make recommendations.

  • To carry out due diligence audits on behalf of customers specific requirements and in accordance with relevant national and international legislation.

  • To produce timely and accurate reports in compliance with the report format agreed with the customer. 

  • To remain up to date on all quality work policies, procedures, instructions and documentation. 

  • To carry out written and verbal communication with customers (internal and external).

  • To prepare accurate reports for management.

  • Identifying specific training needs relevant to the tasks performed by approved team members.

 

Candidate Minimum Skills & Experience  

  • BSc or higher in an aquaculture science related discipline. 

  • At least 5 years hands-on experience in a mid-management/technical or applied research role in aquaculture production systems including fish health management.

  • Understanding and working knowledge of risk assessment processes for biosecurity, health, disease control, animal welfare, environmental, invasive species and food safety applications in aquaculture species and products.

  • General understanding of policy and the regulatory frameworks for aquaculture development, licensing, health and environmental monitoring and control.

  • Experience and knowledge of the Irish industry an advantage  An understanding of Seafood Sustainability and Best Practice Standards and Accreditations.

  • Proficient computer skills in MS Word, Excel, Powerpoint.

  • Proven coaching and communication skills.

  • Ability to drive and travel internationally and work from a home based location.

  • Fluent in the English Language. Other relevant languages would be an advantage.

  • Ability to work alone and prioritise tasks.
